DONDERS, WALKS + HIKES
One of our number one suggestions when visiting the farm is always to take a walk. Whether its a short wander across to the “Big Wood”, a bigger loop around the farm, or hopping in the car for a proper hike. Here are our favourite suggestions.
A Short Donder
The Big Wood: B-line straight across the field from the Pendicle towards the woodland. At the bottom edge of the wood, you’ll find a track that leads into the woodland. Take a slow stroll, admire unfurling ferns and primrose in spring, the bluebells in early summer, or the changing autumn leaves. If you dare- walk up Jamies steps (190ish of them) and make the return journey via Kinnaird or the top of Guardswell Hill.
A Boat Picnic: Pack a backpack full of goodies, including a hot thermos of tea, and make your way to the boat. If its a particularly cold day, pop the fire on whilst you’re in there. If you need a few extra steps- head to the top of the hill for a swing.
A Little Bit Further
The Big Moor Loop: Head straight up hill for the swings, and keep going. In the back corner of the field, you’ll find a style that takes you up and into the glen. Ancient, but tiny, wind pruned oak trees await, with carpets of wood anemone. From here, choose your own loop around the moor- or keep walking up and over, down through Pitmiddle woodland, and have someone pick you up on the other side.
If you want to let your dogs have a bit of a leg stretch- we have some brilliant Forestry Commission woodland near by. Take a walk at Ballo, Little Ballo, Lairds Loch or Lundie Crags- and you wont be disappointed. Forestry trails and lovely lochs- just keep an eye out for the mountain bikers- or take your mountain bike and join them.
Take a Hike
All within a 2 hour drive of Guardswell- you can tackle one of our favs. For all of the above- we recommend you only hike within your ability, make sure you are aware of the weather, tell someone where you are going and when, and be properly equip for the hike of your choosing.
Mayar + Dreish - or even just into Glen Doll/Corrie Fee
Tarmachan Ridge
Schehallion
Ben Lawers- or all 5 munros in that loop if you have a perfect day and leave really early
